Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Crossness Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Crossness is committed to providing gardening and grounds care services in a way that protects the health, safety, and wellbeing of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors, and the wider public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks arising from our gardening activities and maintaining a safe working environment on all sites where we operate.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, and damage to property or the environment arising from our work. We will continually seek to:
Identify and control hazards associated with gardening and grounds maintenance work.
Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised best practice for our industry.
Provide appropriate information, instruction, training, and supervision to our team.
Encourage a positive health and safety culture throughout the company.
Review and improve our systems regularly to ensure they remain effective and up to date.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Crossness has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring suitable arrangements are in place to protect people and property. This includes:
Assessing risks for all significant tasks, including lawn care, hedge cutting, planting, pruning, tree work within our competence, waste handling, and the use of machinery and chemicals.
Ensuring that safe systems of work are developed, documented where necessary, and followed in practice.
Providing appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, and high visibility clothing where risk assessments identify a need.
Maintaining gardening equipment and tools in a safe, serviceable condition and ensuring that defective items are taken out of use promptly.
Making sure that accidents, incidents, and near misses are reported, recorded, and investigated so that lessons are learned and improvements made.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and regular contractor working with Gardeners Crossness has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff are expected to:
Follow the procedures and guidance provided during induction and ongoing training.
Use equipment only for its intended purpose and in accordance with training and instructions.
Wear the personal protective equipment provided and look after it properly.
Report hazards, unsafe conditions, damaged tools, and any concerns about health and safety without delay.
Cooperate fully with management in implementing this policy and any site specific rules.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We conduct risk assessments for our typical gardening tasks and for any new or unusual work we undertake. These assessments consider risks from slips and trips, manual handling, noise, flying debris, sharp tools, machinery, working at height within our scope, and exposure to weather conditions and garden chemicals.
Control measures may include planning the sequence of work, restricting access to work areas, using guarding and safety devices on machinery, selecting suitable tools, using safe lifting techniques, and adapting work methods during adverse weather conditions.
Where work is carried out in shared spaces such as domestic gardens, communal areas, or commercial premises, we will assess the specific layout and conditions of the site and agree practical safety arrangements with the client where appropriate.
Use of Machinery, Tools, and Substances
All powered machinery, including mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, and blowers, is selected and maintained to help ensure safe operation. Guards and safety devices are never removed or overridden. Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to operate powered equipment.
Hand tools are kept in good condition and stored in a safe and orderly manner when not in use. Damaged or defective tools are withdrawn from service.
Where we use horticultural chemicals such as fertilisers, weed control products, and other treatments, we will store, handle, and apply them in accordance with supplier instructions and relevant regulations. We minimise the use of such substances where reasonably practicable and give consideration to environmental impact.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, digging, and repetitive movements. We aim to reduce manual handling risks by:
Planning work to avoid unnecessary lifting and carrying.
Using wheelbarrows, trolleys, and mechanical aids where appropriate.
Training staff in safe lifting and handling techniques.
Encouraging regular breaks and task rotation to reduce strain.
Public and Client Safety
We take reasonable steps to protect clients, visitors, and members of the public while gardening work is in progress. This may include setting up barriers or warning signs, temporarily restricting access to certain areas, and carefully planning the direction of cutting or strimming to avoid throwing debris towards people or property.
Vehicles are parked considerately and equipment is loaded and unloaded with care, with due regard for pedestrians, other road users, and surrounding property.
Training, Information, and Supervision
Gardeners Crossness provides appropriate induction and role specific training, including the safe use of tools and machinery, manual handling, use of personal protective equipment, and basic first aid awareness where relevant to the role.
Supervision is provided to ensure that new and less experienced staff work safely and that established staff continue to follow agreed safe methods of work. Health and safety information is communicated clearly and reviewed regularly.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All work related injuries, incidents, and near misses must be reported to management as soon as practicable. We keep records of such events and take appropriate action to prevent a recurrence.
Emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of serious injury, fire, or chemical exposure, are communicated to staff. First aid kits are carried in vehicles or otherwise made available at work locations so that basic treatment can be provided promptly where needed.
Environmental Considerations
Health and safety is closely linked to how we care for the environment. We seek to carry out gardening work in a way that respects wildlife, plants, and local ecosystems, and we handle green waste responsibly. Where suitable, we encourage sustainable gardening practices and the thoughtful use of resources.
Monitoring, Review, and Policy Availability
This health and safety policy is monitored and reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains effective and reflects current legislation, industry standards, and the nature of our services. Changes in our work methods, equipment, or the scale of our operations may lead to updates to this policy.
The policy is available to employees, clients, and other interested parties on request. All staff are expected to familiarise themselves with its contents and to contribute to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment across all Gardeners Crossness projects.
